Mikey Doble added to his Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship silverware collection as he claimed Jack Sears Trophy honours and a triple points-score finish at the most recent BTCC weekend (3/4 June) from Hampshire's thrillingly fast Thruxton circuit. On what proved to be his strongest race day yet in the UK’s premier motorsport series, the CarStore Power Maxed Racing driver produced a superlative performance in his Vauxhall Astra to net top-15 results in all three contests.
Those finishes - coupled with a sensational lap in qualifying - ensured that Doble left the high-speed Hampshire venue as the winner of the Jack Sears Trophy, which is open to drivers that had not scored an outright BTCC podium prior to the start of the season.Having showcased impressive front-running pace across Saturday’s two practice sessions, Doble emerged as one of the stars of the show in qualifying as he blasted his front-wheel-drive machine onto the second row of the grid.
Continuously improving as the 30-minute pole position shootout wore on, the 24-year-old punched in a best time of 1:15.895 to clinch a career-best fourth place for race one on Sunday.Blasting away from row two as the lights went out for the opening encounter, the Surrey-based racer served up one of the standout drives of the day as he produced a valiant race-long defensive drive to net a top ten finish.
Dropping a couple of positions on the opening lap, Doble soon settled into a groove and despite not having the outright pace of those around him, he remained wheel-perfect to fend off a gaggle of cars on his way to eighth place. The Fewkes Sport Management client then added to his points tally in races two and three as he again showed his class to clinch a brace of 14th place finishes.
Those results have propelled the rookie up the Drivers’ Championship leaderboard whilst in the Jack Sears Trophy, victory at Thruxton has elevated Doble to third place and to within 11 points of the standings summit.
Mikey Doble, CarStore Power Maxed Racing: “What a fantastic weekend it has been for myself and the entire team; I’m over the moon to come away with the Jack Sears Trophy - it was a great feeling to stand on the podium and spray champagne again!
“Having never tested the car at Thruxton prior to FP1 I knew I had to make the most of practice. Early on though it became apparent we had a fast car underneath us and we managed to make it count when it mattered.
“To qualify on the second row of the grid, ahead of multiple champions, in only my fourth BTCC weekend has to be my best achievement of the season far. In race one the two BMW’s jumped me off the line but I was able to hold my ground well and we clung onto eighth after a thrilling final few laps.
“In race two I had some contact early doors which hurt my car slightly and that caused me to slip back to 14th. With two Jack Sears Trophy wins the goal was to win the overall award for the day and we did just that with another 14th place finish.”
The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship returns this weekend (17/18 June) at Oulton Park for rounds 13/14/15 as the series reaches the half way point of the 2023 season.
